The Hidden Power of Algorithm: How Your World is Quietly Being Shaped by Data

Yes, it’s true, the world is moving faster than we think. Most of our daily activities involve social media platforms such as YouTube, TikTok, Instagram, Spotify, Netflix, and many more.

But here’s the question: have you ever stopped and asked yourself, “How does Spotify know my taste in music?” or “How does TikTok always show me content I relate to?” Some people even joke that it reads your mind… haha.

The truth is the answer to all these questions is simply algorithms.
And no —TikTok can’t read your mind in any way.

What is an Algorithm?

The word may sound a little complex, but in reality, it’s simple. An algorithm is just a set of rules, steps, or instructions used to solve a problem.

Imagine you’re baking a cake for the first time. You might ask your mum for the recipe, and she’ll guide you step-by-step, what ingredients to gather, the order to mix them, and how long to bake. That’s a clear set of instructions. Similarly, computers follow step-by-step instructions termed algorithms (as explained earlier), but instead of ingredients, they work with data.


Algorithms in Our Daily Life

Algorithms are not hidden or futuristic inventions. They are everywhere, quietly working in the background.

Some common examples include:

Social Media Feeds: Algorithms decide what posts, videos or pictures you see first. an example will be TikTok, TikTok studies how you interact with content, what you like, share, rewatch, or skip. It also pays attention to details like captions, hashtags, and sounds. Using this data, the algorithm predicts your interests and fills your For You Page with tailored videos. The more you use the app, the more accurate it becomes. This is why long-term users sometimes feel like TikTok “reads their mind.”
and yes truly, this is an aspect of machine learning, we will come back to it.

Streaming Platforms: YouTube, Netflix, and Spotify all use algorithms to recommend videos, shows, or songs you might enjoy.

Banking and Transportation: From fraud detection in banks to traffic management in ride-hailing apps, algorithms are working behind the scenes.

When you go about your daily routine, waking up, saying your prayers, brushing your teeth, taking a bath, dressing up, and getting ready for class, you are following a sequence of steps. You are solving the problem of getting ready for the day, step by step. In other words, you are following an algorithm.

As you see, pretty much everywhere you turn, an algorithm is quietly at work.

Here’s the real truth: algorithms on their own are useless. What gives them power is data.

Every click, like, or search becomes part of a giant dataset. Algorithms learn patterns from this data, and that’s why your feed feels so personalized. It also explains why you don’t enjoy scrolling on someone else’s TikTok account or why your favorite app (Pinterest for me) always seems to “know you.”

This is why, in the tech ecosystem, data is often called “the new oil.” Without it, algorithms have nothing to run on.


The Downsides of Algorithms

While algorithms can be exciting and useful, they also come with challenges:

  • Bias: Because they rely on human-generated data, they can inherit human biases.

  • Invisibility: They often make decisions you don’t even know about. Just like how traffic lights change colors, and you follow them without knowing the rules behind their timing

  • Echo Chambers: By showing you only what you already agree with, algorithms can limit your learning and perspective. Zero challenge
